Un esbozo al vínculo de Nic (seguramente la recuerdan, fan de Queen, presidenta de AQ -bajo el alias de Isis-, tiene un programa de radio por Internet,un sitio dedicado a Roger, ¡y también toca la batería!) con la música y Queen en sus propias palabras.

QFCM (Queen Fan Club Mexico) : ¿Cómo fue tu acercamiento a la música, qué instrumentos tocas y por qué los elegiste?

NP-L (Nicole Pule-Leech) : Siempre he estado en contacto con la música, siempre me encantó escuchar las canciones y cantarlas. Fue en secundaria que toqué mi primer instrumento, el oboe. Ya quería tocar la batería desde entonces, pero mi papa no quiso, y solo me permitió aprender a tocar clarinete u oboe. Así que como no me considero una gran fan del clarinete, escogí el oboe. Sólo tomé lecciones un año pues mis papás hicieron que lo dejara pues como mi hermano estaba estudiando para sus exámenes del último año , se quejaba de que el incesante ruido del oboe desde mi cuarto no lo dejaba estudiar. (Yo practicaba mucho). Y no volví a tocar un instrumento hasta que conocí a mi esposo quien tocaba la gaita. Realmente fue por Davyd (mi esposo) que retomé la idea de tocar nuevamente. Quizá mi edad ya no era la ideal para intentar aprender a tocar desde cero, pero al menos aprendería a leer partituras. Así que me uní al grupo de gaiteros de mi esposo y aprendí a tocar la batería, pero después de seis semanas de tomar lecciones, mi deseo por tocar la gaita fue mayor. Y lo hice. Toqué gaita tres años hasta que mi marido y yo decidimos formar nuestra propia banda de música típica y rock. Compré una batería y retomé las lecciones, también veía todos los videos de conciertos de Queen que podía para aprender a tocar como Roger, trataba de aprender algunos de sus trucos. Sólo soy una novata en esto de la música, realmente no creo que pueda aportar algo nuevo. Sólo lo hago por diversión.

QFCM: ¿Quiénes son tus influencias?

NP-L: Bueno, en cuanto a instrumentos de viento podría mencionar a Jean Michel Jarre y a mi esposo Davyd Leech. En cuanto a la batería total y absolutamente Roger Taylor (de Queen).

QFCM: ¿Qué viene a tu mente cuando escuchas la palabra “Queen”?

NP-L: Freddie Mercury y Roger Taylor.

QFCM: ¿Cómo y cuándo conociste a Queen?

NP-L: Gracias a mi hermano, cuando era pequeña. Cuando él era adolescente Queen ya era una gran figura y yo solía tomar prestados sus cassettes con recopilaciones donde invariablemente había éxitos de Queen. Así fue como conocí su música. Por lo general mi hermano no me permití tocar sus cassettes , por lo que los escuchaba a escondidas cuando él salía.

QFCM: ¿Qué te impacta de Queen y por qué?

NP-L: Su arrogancia, su talento y que son fenomenales. Su arrogancia : porque me ayudaron a tener confianza suficiente para salir avante por mí misma y defender mis convicciones. Ellos lo hacen, así que es posible. Uno no debe permitir ser pisoteado toda la vida. Uno siempre puede mandarlos lejos , si así lo considera ;). Eso es algo que siempre me encantó de Freddie, siempre se mantuvo firme. Roger también es así , y algo de lo que más me agrada de Roger es que si no está de acuerdo con algo, lo dice con toda tranquilidad, sin tratar mal a las personas. Dice las cosas sin rodeos, punto. No implica ninguna cuestión de índole personal. Me gusta que tenga clase. Su talento: bueno, creo que no necesito explicarlo. Saben cantar, su ejecución es brillante y tienen las mejores composiciones. Realmente no hay nadie comparable a Queen desde el punto de vista musical. Lo que me fascina es su talento. Es lo que verdaderamente me atrajo al grupo. Son originales y nadie podría imitar su talento musical aún si lo quisieran. En cuanto a que son fenomenales: esto aplica tanto a su actuación en el escenario y a su forma de conducirse fuera de él. Simplemente se es o no así. Los cuatro lo son. Reamente no hay nada más que decir.

QFCM: ¿Cuál es tu disco favorito de Queen?

NP-L: Jazz

QFCM: ¿Tienes un tema preferido de Queen? , ¿cuál?.

NP-L: Es difícil elegir uno pues hay como 5 temas de Queen que podría en el primer sitio de mi lista. Pero si tengo que elegir uno de esos cinco, entonces es Under Pressure por la base de bajo de John Deacon, me fascina.

QFCM: ¿Tu concierto favorito?

NP-L: ¿Te refieres a un concierto de Queen?. En ese caso sería el audio del concierto de ellos en Melbourne el 19 de abril de 1985. Sólo porque es la primera grabación que tengo de sus conciertos en Melbourne y lo que más se aproxima a escucharlos en vivo aquí.

QFCM: ¿Y video?

NP-L: ¡Oh Dios! Tengo tantos videos de Queen que no puedo responder tan fácilmente. Tendría que separarlos por categorías: el mejor video en concierto, el mejor video oficial, el mejor no oficial, y la mejor entrevista en video , ya que en cada categoría tengo un favorito. Si la pregunta se refiere al mejor video en concierto eligiría el DVD oficial “Queen Live at Wembley”. Ya me lo acabé de tanto verlo.

QFCM: En caso de haber leído algún libro de Queen, ¿cuál te ha asombrado y por qué?

NP-L: ¡Dios mío! Sin duda el libro de su 40º aniversario. Apenas lo compramos y es sorprendente. Uno debe tener dos ejemplares de este libro: uno para leerlo y otro para guardarlo intacto en la colección. Vamos a comprar otro pues queremos disfrutar todas las sorpresas que el equipo de Queen ha incluído en esta edición , como las réplicas de boletos, posters, etc. El otro ejemplar no lo vamos abrir, lo pondremos directamente en nuestra colección de Queen . El equipo de Queen ha hecho un magnífico trabajo en este libro. Realmente creo que es un signo de que el Queen que invariablemente solía sorprendernos en la época con Freddie, está de regreso. Si Queen sigue lanzando material de este tipo, seguramente estaré en quiebra porque voy a querer comprarlo todo…ja, ja, ja.

QFCM: ¿Qué opinas de Freddie Mercury?

NP-L: Una leyenda, un alma extraordinaria, un ser excepcional, un tipo maravilloso en todos los aspectos. Me hubiera gustado conocerlo. Verdaderamente ha cambiado mi vida.

QFCM: ¿Cuál crees que fue su legado al mundo de la música?

NP-L: Bueno, en el especto musical, sería que fue capaz de incluir la ópera al mundo del rock , y su gran dinamismo en el escenario. Todo ha dado resultado, y hasta ahora nadie ha sido capaz de imitar su talento , ni su habilidad para llegar a un inmenso público en todo el mundo durante tanto tiempo como él pudo hacerlo.

QFCM: ¿Qué tema te hubiera gustado tocar con él?, ¿y con Queen?

NP-L: Bueno, ya que no interpreto música de Queen propiamente dicha, cambiaría un poco la pregunta a ¿qué canción te hubiera gustado que te dedicara (Freddie)?, ¿y Queen? Mis respuestas serían: Bijou y Under Pressure respectivamente.

QFCM: Nuevamente como músico ¿cuál es la aportación de John, Roger y Brian?

NP-L: Creo que la gente no extrañó el sonido de John hasta que se formó el grupo Queen + Paul Rodgers. No quiero que me malinterpreten , Danny Miranda hizo un magnífico trabajo en el lugar de John, pero hizo falta el sonido característico de John en los nuevos temas de Queen + Paul Rodgers. No obstante fue muy parecido ;) , pero ese sonido del bajo que se convirtió en el sello de John Deacon no se escucha allí. También está el hecho de que John haya decidido dejar a Queen después de la muerte de Freddie y de esta forma preservar con él una parte del Queen original , manteniéndose al margen por así decirlo. Casi como un guardián del legado de Queen con Freddie. Lo respeto por eso.

Roger – Podría decir que su legado es todas las fans que tiene aquí (ja, ja, ja) , pero no puedo pasar por alto su voz y su forma de tocar la batería. Por otro lado está el hecho de que él llevó a a una segunda generación de fans de Queen que no tuvieron la oportunidad de disfrutar del Queen de la primera época. También es un hombre con una férrea convicción política que respeto, por ejemplo me encanta la manera en que sale y se se enfrenta a la autoridad. Confrontó a Murdoch , así que me quito el sombrero ante cualquiera que haya tenido el valor de hacerlo, y que aún viva para contarlo.

Brian May – Es un poco más difícl definirlo, pues él ya será una leyenda debido a su campaña en pro de los derechos de los animales y otros proyectos en los que está involucrado, pero en lo concerniente a la música sobresale por su destreza al tocar su guitarra Red Special . Es un tipo muy inteligente y un genio de la guitarra. Eso es todo. Puedes sentarte y verlo tocar , no podrás evitar pensar: “¡Caramba, es soprendente!”. Jamás alguien superará su forma de tocar la guitarra.

A rough outline on Nic (you do know her, a keen Queen fan ,the president of AQ, she’s also got a radio programme via internet, a site for Roger, and also plays drums!) link to music and Queen in her own words.

QFCM (Queen Fan Club Mexico): How did you start into music?, what do you play?, why did you choose your instrument?

NP-L: I was always into music loved to listen to it and sing along with music. It was not until high school that I played my first instrument which was the Oboe. I wanted to play the drums back then but my dad would not have it and said I was only allowed to learn the Oboe or Clarinet. So I picked the Oboe can’t say I am a big fan of the Clarinet. I played it for a year before my parents stopped me from playing it because my brother was doing his final year exams for high school and he complained he could not study with the noise of the oboe always going from my room. (I did practice a fair bit). I didn’t pick up an instrument again until I met my husband who played the bagpipes. It was really through Davyd (my husband) that I found my way back to trying to play music again. It was probably a little late in life to start to learn from scratch but I could read music at least. So I joined my husband’s bagpipe band and tried to learn the drums but after 6 weeks of sitting in the drumming room I found myself just wanting to play the bagpipes more. So I did. I played for about 3 years when my hubby and I decided to start up our own folk rock band. I purchased a drum kit and went off and had lessons and sat and watched Roger play on Queen live concert recordings as much as possible to learn some of his tricks. I am just a novice musician nothing to brag about really. Just do it for fun.

QFCM: What are your main influences?

NP-L: Well for the wind instruments it would have been Jean Michel Jarre and my husband Davyd Leech. For drumming it was totally Roger Taylor (from Queen) all the way.

QFCM: What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when listening to the Word “Queen”?

NP-L: Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor.

QFCM: How and when did you first know about Queen?

NP-L: From my brother when I was a young kid. Queen were big in his teenage years and I use to take his music tapes he use to make up and there would be the big hit Queen tracks always on there. So that is how I first came into contact with their music. My brother would not normally let me touch his tapes so I use to listen to them in secret when he was out for the day.

QFCM: What do you admire the most about Queen and why?

NP-L: Their arrogance, their talent and coolness. Their arrogance - Because they help me to be confident to stand up for myself and what I believe in. They do it, so it is possible. You don’t have to always let people tread all over you in life. You can tell them to shove off if you want to ;) I love that most about Freddie he always stood up for himself. Roger is also like this and I love that most about Roger if he doesn’t like something he lets you know about it and he does it in a cool way without tearing people down. He just calls a spade a spade and that is all to it. Nothing personal thrown in the mix extra. I like that he has style. Their Talent – well I don’t really need to say anything much about this point. They can sing, play music brilliantly and write the best music. Nothing really has come close to Queen musically. I love their talent most of all. It is what really attracted me to all of them. They are original and no one can copy their musical talent even if they try. As for their coolness - This applies to their stage show presence and their off stage personalities. If you are cool you just have it or you don’t. All four of them have it. That is all to it really.

QFCM: What’s the Queen record you like the most?

NP-L: Jazz

QFCM: Do you have a dearest Queen song?, which one?

NP-L: Hard to pick just one as I have about 5 Queen tracks that are listed on my number 1 Queen track. If I had to pick 1 from the 5 it would have to be Under Pressure. It is just that Deacon Bass line I love it.

QFCM: What’s your favourite concert?

NP-L: Do you mean Queen concert? If so it would have to be the 1985 04 19 Melbourne audio concert. Only because it is the first recording that I have of their concerts in Melbourne which is the closest I get to them playing here.

QFCM: And video?

NP-L: Oh gosh I have so many videos of Queen I can’t answer this one easily. I would have to break it down to best live concert video, best official video, best bootleg video and best interview video as I have a favourite for each area. If you want best concert video it would have to be the official DVD of Queen Live at Wembley. I have worn that dvd out.

QFCM: Which Queen book do you find the most amazing and why?

NP-L: OMG it has to be the new Queen 40th anniversary book. We just got it this week and it is amazing. We are going to buy another copy of it as you have to have one book you can open up all the surprises Queen Production have put in the book like the replica tickets, fold up posters and so on. The second copy we will get we won’t open it up it will go straight into our Queen collection. You have to have 2 copies of this book one to read and one to collect (untouched). Queen Production have done an amazing job on this book. It is really a sign of the old wow Queen factor during the days of Freddie starting to come back. If Queen keep on releasing merchandise like this I will be broke as I will have to get all of it…. lol.

QFCM: What do you think of Freddie Mercury?

NP-L: Legend, amazing soul, one of a kind, all round wonderful guy. I wish I got to meet him. He has changed my life really.

QFCM: What’s his legacy to music in your opinion?

NP-L: Well I think musically it would be that he was able to bring an operatic element to the rock world and he was a dynamic showman on stage. It all just works and no one has been able to replicate his talent and ability to connect to so many in an audience across the world for such a long period of time like he has.

QFCM: Which song would you have loved playing with him?, and with Queen?

NP-L: Well since I don’t play Queen music I would have to change this question a bit to maybe which song would you have loved to have him play to me? And with Queen? The answer to that question would have to be Bijou and Under Pressure.

QFCM: What’s John, Roger and Brian’s legacy to music?

NP-L: It think for John it was not until Queen + Paul Rodgers formed that people really noticed John’s sound was missing. Don’t get me wrong here Danny Miranda did an amazing job filling in for John but that John sound was just not there in the new music that Queen + Paul Rodgers produced. It was close though ;) but the bass signature sound of John Deacon was missing. Also that John quit Queen after Freddie died and with that he has preserved some of the original Queen with him by staying on the bench so to speak. Almost like the keeper of the Queen legacy with Freddie. I respect him for that.

Roger – I could say his legacy with women here (lol) but would have to say his voice and his drumming style. Also that he brought Queen back to a second generation of Queen fans who never had the chance to experience Queen in their hay days. He also has a strong political opinion which I respect and love how he comes out and stands up against the authority so to speak. He took on Murdoch so have to tip my hat to anyone that has the guts to do that and survive to talk about it.

Brian May – is a bit tougher because he would be a legend to some for his movement to fight for animal rights and other side projects he does but musically he stands out most for his abilities on that Red special guitar of his. He is a smart cookie and a genius on the guitar. That is all to it. You can only stand back and watch the guy strum away and say to yourself “WOW amazing stuff!” No one will ever beat his style with the guitar
