LUCIE HALAMÍKOVÁ: ENTREVISTA

*Videos , imagenes 5 sep 2010: AQUÍ
-

Lunes 13 de septiembre del 2010

-

-

-¿Cuándo empezaste a tocar?

Admiro a Queen (¡qué sorpresa!, ¿verdad?

Me senté, y allí me quedé. Entonces empecé a pensar : " Oh, ¿Queen?

-

-¿Cuál es tu disco preferido de Queen?

“A Night At The Opera”.

-

Como por ejemplo: “Princess Of The Universe”, “Love Of My Life”, “Another One Bites The Dust”, “Is This The World We Created?”, “Death On Two Legs”, “Mother Love”,”In My Defense” (la canción de Freddie), “How Can I Go On” (otro tema de él).

-

-

-

-¿Cómo surgió la idea de formar Lucie & the Diamonds? ¿Quién tuvo la idea de formarlo?

Lucie & The Diamonds – Fue idea de Drago Grgić. Él me encontró en YouTube y me envió un mensaje y su cover a “Too Much Love Will Kill You” vía correo electrónico.

¡¡No me impusieron ninguna limitante!!!

"Is This The World We Created ? ".

-

* ** * ** * ** *

(English version)

-

13th September 2010

-

Lucie Halamíková was interveiwed by Queen Fan Club Mexico. This is what she kindly said:

-

-How long have you been playing? How did you get into music?

I play piano since I was 6 years old. I started to play on the old piano when I was visiting my Grandmother and my parents decided to try to get me at music school. I had very good teacher there and I think I thank her for my love for piano.

-

-Who are your biggest influences? Whose musicians do you admire the most?

I admire Queen (surprise, don´t you think ? :-), then Queen and also Queen ...:-) From musicians Freddie, Brian, Roger and John. And I also love music of Norah Jones. So these are my influences I think.

-

-You are a musician, a singer and a composer, which of these 3 aspects do you prefer, or enjoy the most if any? I mean playing, singing or writing lyrics?

At first I became a musician - pianist, a bit later a composer. Because I didn´t have anybody to sing my songs (I previously had two singers to sing my songs but they finally stopped after some while...) I became a singer :-) I studied piano and composition but not singing. It´s hard to answer the question about what I enjoy more - if playing, singing or composing....I like it all together :-)

-

-Is it difficult somehow for you to sing in a foreign language different from your mother tongue?

About English...other must say theirs opinion about my English. I try to do my best but I surely know I make mistakes sometimes - especially in a pronunciation. Some people on YT wrote me that I have a slovak (Czech) kind of accent in my English. I don´t feel difficult to sing in English - what more - I could say I like it more then in Czech :-) Because English is very good language for singing. I also compose my own songs with my own English lyrics ( they are on YT channel too).

-

-How and when did you get hooked into Queen music?

I know exactly the moment when I was hooked into Queen music !!! It was one day in 1988 when my father and brother watched "Queen - Live in Budapest" on Czech TV. At that time I loved a singer Jason Donovan ( you know I was just 12 so he was nice and kind of teens love at that time...:-) I listened to the Queen music (playing from our TV) just from different room of our house and somehow came into the living room and I saw Freddie for the first time. I sat there and didn´t go out of the room. I started to have these thoughts in my mind : " Oh, what I like on this music...Queen...?...no, nothing for me...but it´s gorgeous...and the singer running up and down the stage...and his VOICE !!!..."Simply - I didn´t believe I can "replace" Jason with Freddie. But it happened and since that time I became to collect every music, tape, article about Queen. Sadly, not long time after I got to know Queen I read an article about Freddie´s death.

-

-What is your favourite Queen album?

A Night At The Opera

-

-Do you have any favourite Queen songs? Which?

There are lots of !!! But I can write some of them : Princess Of The Universe, Love Of My Life, Another One Bites The Dust, Is This The World We Created ?, Death On Two Legs, Mother Love,In My Defense (Freddie´s song), How Can I Go On ( Freddie´s song).

-

-In your opinion as a musician what's the most difficult Queen song to be covered and why?

I think from those songs I covered till now the most difficult was "Mustapha". It was because of difficult piano part and singing together with playing it.

-

-Have you ever seen Queen live?

I have never seen Queen live because I was too young. This is the only reason I would like to be older - to have the possibility to see Queen live. But when I got to know them I was just 12 and it was in 1988 - so Queen didn´t play live anymore. If I was older I would definitely visit their concert in Budapest.

-

-What does Queen mean to you?

Queen - great music, stunning voice of Freddie, Brian´s gorgeous guitar playing, 4 very talented musicians, perfectionism, kind people, influence for all my life and for my music.

-

-Whose idea was to form Lucie and the Diamonds? How did the group start?

Lucie & The Diamonds - the idea became from Drago Grgić. He found me on YT and wrote me an email with his music for Too Much Love Will Kill You. Because his work was excellent we decided to collaborate together. Later he found Jean Baptiste (bass guitar) the similar way. We three together love Queen music and that was also very important thing that join us together.

-

-You were featured in the programme for the 8th Freddie Mercury's Memorial Day in Montreux this year, how did you get involved in the event? When were you notified of it?

I was phoned at the beginning of August 2010. I was told about the possibility to play on this great event. Although it was quite short time to prepare (only a month) I definitely said yes to the offer.

-

-What was your first reaction at knowing you would be in Montreux? What was your biggest illusion? And your biggest fear?

At first I almost couldn´t believe they found me !!! ...and couldn´t believe I will finally play in Montreux...but later I became to look forward to see Montreux - this beautiful place Freddie loved so much and lived in. I really looked forward to have the possibility to play for Freddie in time of his birthday , and to play him also my own song "Evermore". The biggest fear was about my voice because of the shorter and bigger preparations for this event.

-

-Who chose the songs to be performed in Montreux?

I chose the songs for Montreux. I chose a bit not too famous songs to play in Montreux. I simply think they are nice and worth playing live too.

-

-Who sang with you "Tavaszi Szél"?

Tibor Tóth ( a Hungarian singer from Queen Unplugged Project).I had covered Hungarian traditional song "Tavaszi Szél" ,and Tibor was in Montreux too ( he went on bike from Hungary !!!). So we spoke together just several minutes before our performance. Tibor was great - he also spoke to audience to sing with us...

-

-Did the organizers limit your performance, or did they encourage and support you all the time?

There were no limitations from the organizers !!! I was told to play as many songs as I wanted to...so I tried to sing as many as I could ( or better my voice was able to..). Rita and Norbert (from Montreuxmusic team) were both very friendly and kind people and they were very helpful all the time.

-

-What was your impression at being actually in Montreux at Freddie's statue as a musician and as a fan?

Being next to Freddie´s statue...one of my biggest dream came true !!! And as a musician...great feelings I can play for Freddie and for the audience - they were great :-)

-

-What did you feel while playing there?

I felt I want to play my best. I didn´t feel nervous about playing.

-

-What thoughts crossed your mind while playing?

When playing I concentrated only on playing and singing and tried to express my inner feelings in the songs. When playing "Evermore" (my song dedicated to Freddie) I thought about Freddie and felt more sad because I realized that what I sing is really true and that I really miss Freddie a lot...I had similar feelings when singing "No-One But You".

-

-What was it like playing outdoors, people walking around, talking, and feeling the breeze on your face?

Playing outdoor was really nice and different experience - and on so great place it was really beautiful !

-

-What's the difference between playing for the vids on YouTube and a live presentation? Does the setting affect your playing in any way?

The main differences between live and YT playing are that I can´t play the song once again if there is some mistake. And the second difference is the audience immediately on the place. Really great to hear the reactions during and after playing :-)

-

-What kind of atmosphere did you feel among the attendants?

Nice relaxed atmosphere, people were very kind and smiling - celebrating Freddie and Queen !

-

-Which song from your repertoire did you like the best?

I like the best "Is This The World We Created ? ".

-

-Which one was the most difficult to perform? Why?

Most difficult - probably "Mr.Bad Guy" and "Jesus". Just because of a piano part and my voice condition in Mr Bad Guy.

-

-When , how and why was "Evermore" written by you? Is it just a means of expressing something to Freddie or did you want to send any message?

"Evermore" was written from my inner feelings about Freddie and in time I felt these feelings more inside of my mind. At first it was just for Freddie to tell him what everything he means for me and how much I miss him. Later I thought I could share it with other Queen lovers and fans because I think their feelings can be similar to mine.

-

-What do you admire most in Freddie Mercury?

I admire his voice, personality, extraordinary musical talent and perfectionism.

-

-Was Peter Freestones as you'd pictured him?

Peter was as I imagined. I heard he is kind and friendly person but I thing (after I met him) he is much more then this....I would like to thank him for everything he did for Freddie and now he does for all fans in the whole world !!!

-

-Whose idea was taking a picture of Freddie and Lucie's shadows on the floor -with one arm to the sky?

My mother´s idea at first was to took a picture of Freddie and me with "hands above the water" together...but I thought this photo with our shadows will be better and more uncommon.

-

-Were you satisfied with your performance last 5th September?

Yes, quite satisfied...but I think I can´t value myself !

-

-What did it mean to you performing in Montreux?

To perform in Montreux - impossible to express my feelings....I feel I did something I always wanted somewhere inside on my soul. To express my big thanks to Freddie and Queen for everything they did.I hope Freddie could listen...

-

-Now that you see your pictures and videos, what do you think of your performance last weekend?

Nice memories :-)

-

-How have your fans on YT reacted? Have you received any comments about it yet?

I uploaded all my videos just yesterday. I have several nice comments - thank you for them - it means a lot for me !

-

-What do you think is Freddie's role or legacy in Rock and Roll?

Legacy - great voice, great music and great style made a rock legend !

-

-Why is Queen music timeless in your opinion?

Timeless - I think because Queen´s melodies are strong, music was composed with a care for every detail so it will never bore you (for ex. different instrument´s sounds made on Brians guitar..), Freddie´s voice is the best so far, Brian´s guitar sound is rare (I mean different and so nice) and Roger and John are great musicians. Their music must be timeless because it´s so good.

-

-What's next for Lucie Halamíková? Do you have any plans for 2011?

Lots of plans...to make more Queen piano covers for YT channel, to make more Queen covers with Lucie &The Diamonds and to find some time to compose my own songs too...

-

We really appreciate Lucie’s time, willingness and attention to our questions, and we also thank her very much for sharing her experience and comments with the fans.
